ViaRhôna was originally developed through a partnership bringing together the three regions crossed by the route: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Sud (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur) and Occitanie, along with the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR).
In 2013–2014, this partnership was strengthened with the creation of a Route Committee bringing together the French government, the European Union, the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône, and the three partner regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Occitanie. Together, the partners set the ambition of making ViaRhôna a major tourism project by 2028 and launched the route's tourism development strategy.
The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region is responsible for political and technical coordination, while Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Tourisme leads the marketing action plan and coordinates promotional activities.
The marketing committee includes:
- 12 departmental tourism agencies (ADTs) along the route: Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Isère, Ain, Loire, Rhône, Ardèche, Drôme, Hérault, Gard, Vaucluse, Bouches du Rhône
- Lyon and its metro area
- the three regional tourism boards (CRTs) : Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Tourisme, Sud Paca, Occitanie
ViaRhôna: effective and innovative governance
Since 2021, ViaRhôna's governance has been organised by sections of the route. The itinerary has therefore been divided into three sections, each with a local coordination structure responsible for bringing together stakeholders and coordinating initiatives along its part of the route.
This approach ensures close collaboration with local partners and enables more effective management of issues relating to route development and visitor experience.
